Our small country Inn built c1735, though believed to be a lot older than that, is situated in the heart of this very large village. With having accommodation just next door, we are an ideal base from which to explore the whole of the Broadland area, as well as some notable attractions.
Just 15 miles from here will take you into Norwich, or up to Cromer, or down to Great Yarmouth. A little further and you can discover the North Norfolk coast and some of the magnificent country estates, from Sandringham to Holkam Hall.
On our own doorstep is the 1200 acres of Hickling Nature Reserve, as well as Hickling Broad. Where once there was marshland and peat bogs, it turned into a hand dug area that eventually filled with water.
Debbie & Tony - Your Hosts
The extracted peat was used to heat such places as St Bennett's Abbey, The Prior in Hickling and Norwich Church and Priory, before being given Cathedral status. The Broad, as it became known later, suffered severe flooding, that then connected it to the river system, almost as we know it today.
At either end of the year is the bird migration season. An ideal place for people to stay and use us as a base for watching some rare species flying in and out on their way either North or South.
You are also advised to book for our Restaurant, plus in the summer months, our award-winning garden is also very popular. Children are welcome, so long as they are bolted down.
Dogs are also welcome so long as they are kept on a lead.
